Roll and Read Sight Words for Little Learners - 1st 100 Fry Sight Words
By Mrs. Magee | First Grade Brain

These fun, roll and read practice pages cover the first 100 Fry Sight Words. Sight words, also referred to as high frequency words, make up the majority of words in all reading material, and many cannot be sounded out. Trying to sound out every word, especially words that cannot be phonetically sounded out, decreases a child’s fluency and comprehension. It is critical students learn to recognize sight words automatically (by sight) to fully comprehend what they read. There are different sight word lists (Dolch Words, Fry Words) but both lists are essentially the same and cover almost all of the same important words. The first 100 Fry words are broken down into 20 different “games” of 5 words each. When teaching sight words, it is best to start with a small group of words as not to overwhelm your child or students in your classroom setting. When using the game with preschool aged children, I recommend only using five words at a time. For example, when using this game with my four year old son, we began with the first five words. After he had mastered those five words, we went on to the next five and so on. How to Use Roll and Read Pages: • Laminate each Roll and Read page or use with page protectors or SmartPals/Page Sleeves. • Students take turns rolling the numbered dice. They read the word that corresponds to the number they roll. • After reading the row they mark a tally in the column under the number they rolled. • If they roll a 6, a smiley face, they can choose any word
