GEOGRAPHY: HOW TO CREATE A POLITICAL CARTOON (STUDENT HANDOUT & EXAMPLES)

By Geography and Math Made Easy

Political cartoons offer students a creative way to express their viewpoints and concerns. To support this, I will provide a handout titled "How to Create a Political Cartoon," which will include samples and recommended online platforms where students can design their own cartoons. Teaching kids political cartoons is a powerful way to build critical thinking, visual literacy, and historical understanding. Political cartoons use humor, symbolism, and exaggeration to comment on current events and social issues, helping students learn to interpret messages beyond just text. Analyzing cartoons encourages students to ask questions like: What is the cartoonist trying to say? Whose perspective is being shown? What symbols are used and why? These skills not only deepen their understanding of history and government but also prepare them to be thoughtful, informed citizens in a world full of media messages. WHAT’S INCLUDED? • Examples of Political Cartoons • Fun Instructional sheet on "How To Create A Political Cartoon" • Suggested sites for students to use to create political Cartoons. ☑ For secondary — middle school and high school students ☑ Check out the preview to see what is included.
