FOMO and Social Comparison Lesson

By Graphene - Digital Life Lessons

FOMO is not new, but social media has made it constant, ambient, and hard to switch off. Students are not just comparing themselves to a few people around them; they are comparing their everyday lives to hundreds of curated highlights. Students examine the psychology behind social comparison, work through realistic comparison triggers, and complete a private FOMO audit of their own patterns. This resource helps students understand the appearance vs. reality gap and think more clearly about how social media can affect self-esteem, belonging, and decision-making. This is a low-prep, structured discussion lesson designed to help students think clearly, not tell them what to think. It gives teachers a careful way to discuss social media, comparison, loneliness, exclusion, self-esteem, and digital wellbeing without shaming students or forcing personal disclosure.
