Geography: Battleship: Latitude & Longitude (Absolute Location) Map Skills

By Geography and Math Made Easy

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed. Are you tired of the repetitive worksheets and workbooks that promise to teach your students how to read absolute location (latitude and longitude)? Try out the Battleship: Latitude & Longitude game. This introductory lesson involves a game that will not only encourage students to learn how to read coordinates, but they will have a blast doing it as they sink ships for points. I have used this activity in my 7th-grade geography, class but this activity is great for all learning levels. Please note, this is a class activity that the entire class will play together. Students will work in cooperative teams (class is split into team 1 and team 2) and will work cooperatively within the teams to identify the location of ships throughout the world, using the deduction method. Students will walk away from this lesson having a better understanding of how to accurately read latitude and longitude. Teachers, feel free to modify this lesson to meet your students' needs. Note: This will come in a zip file. Please print all three files. I am not clear on why it created 3 files instead of one, but all components needed are included within one of the three files. ☑ Check out the preview to see what is included.
