Collaborative Cardboard Sculpture Challenge

By Color Me Creative Art Room

Give middle and high school students a hands-on sculpture challenge that combines 3D design, problem-solving, teamwork, and low-cost materials. In this Collaborative Cardboard Sculpture Challenge, students use ordinary corrugated cardboard to design and construct a freestanding abstract sculpture while exploring form, negative space, repetition, texture, balance, stability, construction, and craftsmanship. Unlike a completely open-ended sculpture assignment, this project gives students clear requirements, visual construction techniques, group roles, planning pages, daily checkpoints, rubrics, reflection, and critique support. Students can complete the project in small groups of 3–4 or individually, making it flexible for different class sizes, schedules, and ability levels. Why Teachers Will Love It - Uses inexpensive, easy-to-find materials - Keeps students actively building and problem-solving - Includes clear project requirements - Provides visual cardboard construction techniques - Includes daily checkpoints to keep groups moving - Works collaboratively or individually - Includes separate group and individual assessment - Built-in differentiation supports mixed-ability classrooms - Includes a simplified version for students who need fewer requirements - Works well for middle school and high school - Provides enough structure without eliminating creativity Perfect For - Middle school art - High school art - Grades 6–12 - Art Foundations - 3D art - Sculpture units - Collabo
